10 Everyday Habits That Harm Your Teeth (and What to Do Instead)

Most of us know the basics of oral care—brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist regularly. But did you know some of your everyday habits could be sabotaging your smile? At Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care, we want to help you protect your teeth for life. Here are 10 common habits that harm your teeth—and how to fix them!

1. Brushing Too Hard

The Problem: Aggressive brushing can wear down enamel and irritate your gums.

The Fix: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions.

2. Skipping Flossing

The Problem: Plaque and food particles between teeth cause cavities and gum disease.

The Fix: Floss at least once daily or try a water flosser for convenience.

3. Chewing Ice

The Problem: Ice can crack or chip your teeth.

The Fix: Satisfy the craving with cold water instead.

4. Nail Biting

The Problem: This habit can chip teeth and introduce harmful bacteria to your mouth.

The Fix: Keep nails trimmed or use a bitter-tasting nail polish to break the habit.

5. Using Teeth as Tools

The Problem: Opening packages or bottles with your teeth can cause fractures.

The Fix: Always reach for scissors or the proper tool instead.

6. Drinking Too Many Sugary Beverages

The Problem: Soda, sports drinks, and sweetened coffee bathe your teeth in sugar and acid.

The Fix: Opt for water or unsweetened beverages—and rinse your mouth after indulgence.

7. Constant Snacking

The Problem: Frequent eating gives bacteria more chances to produce cavity-causing acids.

The Fix: Stick to balanced meals and limit snacks to reduce acid attacks on enamel.

8. Grinding Your Teeth

The Problem: Bruxism (teeth grinding) wears down enamel and causes jaw pain.

The Fix: Ask your dentist about a custom nightguard to protect your teeth.

9. Overusing Whitening Products

The Problem: Excessive whitening can lead to sensitivity and enamel erosion.

The Fix: Follow your dentist’s recommendations for safe whitening.

10. Ignoring Dental Visits

The Problem: Skipping checkups means problems go unnoticed until they become serious.

The Fix: Schedule regular cleanings and exams every six months.
