As backpacks fill up and school bells start ringing, there’s one important thing that shouldn’t get left off your back-to-school checklist: your child’s smile!
At Rancho Bernardo Family Dental Care, we believe that good oral health sets the tone for a confident, successful school year. Whether you’ve got a kindergartener or a high school senior, here are five simple dental tips to help your child return to class with a healthy smile and healthy habits.
1. Book That Back-to-School Dental Checkup
Before the school schedule fills up with homework, sports, and extracurriculars, make time for a professional cleaning and exam. We can catch early signs of cavities, gum inflammation, or orthodontic issues before they become bigger problems—and ensure your child is cavity-free for the start of the year.
Bonus tip: If your child wears braces or retainers, we’ll make sure everything’s fitting well and working as it should!
2. Consider Dental Sealants for Extra Protection
Molars can be tricky to clean—especially for younger kids still mastering brushing. Dental sealants provide a protective barrier over these grooves, helping to prevent cavities during the cavity-prone school years.
They’re quick, painless, and can make a big difference in your child’s long-term dental health.
3. Pack a Smile-Friendly Lunchbox
Lunch and snack choices have a big impact on teeth. Try to limit sticky, sugary foods like fruit snacks and candy, and instead pack tooth-friendly options like:
Crunchy fruits and veggies (apples, carrots, celery)
Cheese sticks or yogurt (calcium = strong teeth!)
Water instead of juice or soda
And if your child chews gum, opt for sugar-free gum with xylitol—it can actually help fight cavity-causing bacteria.
4. Stick to a Brushing Routine (Even on Busy Mornings!)
Early mornings can be hectic, but brushing for 2 minutes, twice a day is essential. Make it part of your family’s morning and bedtime rituals—use a fun timer, brushing app, or reward chart for younger kids to stay on track.
And don’t forget to floss! For older kids and teens, this is especially important if they wear braces.
5. Mouthguards Matter for Student Athletes
If your child plays a contact sport like football, soccer, or basketball, a custom-fit mouthguard can prevent broken or knocked-out teeth. It’s a small investment that can save your child from a painful injury (and you from an unexpected dental emergency!).
