Do You Really Need a Nightguard? Signs You Might Be Grinding Your Teeth

Have you ever woken up with a sore jaw, headache, or tooth sensitivity? If so, you might be grinding your teeth at night—a condition known as bruxism. While it may seem harmless, teeth grinding can lead to serious dental issues if left untreated. One of the most effective ways to protect your teeth is by using a custom nightguard. But how do you know if you need one?

What Is a Nightguard?

A nightguard is a custom-made dental appliance worn while you sleep. It acts as a cushion between your upper and lower teeth, preventing damage from grinding and clenching. Unlike store-bought versions, professional nightguards are tailored to fit your mouth for maximum comfort and protection.

Signs You Might Be Grinding Your Teeth

Not sure if bruxism is affecting you? Look out for these common signs:

Morning jaw pain or tightness

Headaches, especially after waking up

Worn-down or chipped teeth

Increased tooth sensitivity

Clicking or popping in the jaw joint

Unexplained damage to dental restorations

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s time to talk to your dentist.

Why Is Grinding a Big Deal?

Bruxism isn’t just uncomfortable—it can cause long-term problems, including:

Tooth fractures or enamel wear

Jaw disorders like TMJ

Gum recession and sensitivity

Costly dental repairs

Benefits of Wearing a Nightguard

Protects teeth from damage

Reduces jaw strain and muscle tension

Helps prevent headaches caused by clenching

Can improve sleep quality
