Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common dental problems in adults—but when caught early, it’s highly preventable. At Rancho Bernardo Dental Care, our goal is to help you recognize the early signs so you can maintain a healthy, confident smile.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease occurs when plaque and bacteria accumulate along the gum line, leading to inflammation and infection. Early-stage gum disease, or gingivitis, can often be reversed with proper care. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, causing tooth loss and potentially impacting your overall health.
Common Early Signs of Gum Disease
Recognizing gum disease early can save your teeth and your health. Look for these warning signs:
Red, swollen, or tender gums – Healthy gums are firm and pink.
Bleeding while brushing or flossing – A common early symptom.
Persistent bad breath – Caused by bacterial buildup.
Receding gums – Gums pulling away from teeth create bacterial pockets.
Loose teeth or changes in bite – Indicates advanced gum disease.
Risks of Untreated Gum Disease
Untreated gum disease can lead to:
Tooth loss from damaged bone and tissue
Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
Complications with diabetes
Gum infections or abscesses requiring surgical intervention
Prevention Tips for Healthy Gums
Maintaining strong, healthy gums involves daily care and regular professional checkups:
Brush at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
Use an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria
Schedule regular dental exams and professional cleanings
Avoid tobacco products that worsen gum disease
Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins C and D
