February is American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health. While most people associate heart health with diet, exercise, and blood pressure, many are surprised to learn that oral health plays an important role in overall heart wellness.
At Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care, patient education goes beyond teeth and gums. Understanding how oral health connects to the rest of the body helps patients make informed choices that support long-term wellness.
The mouth is the gateway to the body. When oral health is compromised—particularly by untreated gum disease—it can allow harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream. Research has shown associations between chronic gum inflammation and conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular concerns.
While gum disease does not directly cause heart disease, studies suggest that the inflammation and bacteria involved may contribute to cardiovascular problems, especially in individuals already at risk.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, begins with plaque buildup and inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, it can progress and lead to:
This inflammatory response may contribute to the narrowing of blood vessels and increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. Maintaining healthy gums is one more way patients can support their heart health.
Many people are unaware they have gum disease because early symptoms can be mild. Warning signs may include:
Regular dental exams are essential for identifying and addressing these issues before they affect overall health.
Consistent oral hygiene and routine dental visits play a key role in maintaining both oral and systemic health. Preventive care includes:
At Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care, preventive dentistry is a cornerstone of patient care—helping patients protect not just their smiles, but their overall well-being.
Heart health and oral health share common risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, stress, and poor nutrition. Addressing these factors through regular medical and dental care creates a more complete approach to wellness.
For San Diego patients, maintaining a healthy smile is one more step toward supporting a healthy heart—especially during American Heart Month.
February is the perfect time to prioritize preventive care. A dental exam and cleaning can help protect your oral health and may contribute to better overall wellness.
