When faced with a severely damaged or infected tooth, deciding between root canal therapy and tooth extraction can be daunting. Both procedures aim to resolve dental issues, but they differ significantly in approach and long-term impact on oral health. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision that suits your dental needs and preferences.
Root canal therapy involves removing infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then sealing them to prevent further infection.
Root canal therapy is typically recommended when the tooth can be saved and the infection or damage hasn’t severely compromised its structural integrity.
Tooth extraction involves completely removing the tooth from its socket in the jawbone.
Tooth extraction may be recommended if the tooth is severely damaged, cannot be saved with root canal therapy, or poses a risk to adjacent teeth and gums.
Choosing between root canal therapy and tooth extraction requires careful consideration of your dental condition, long-term oral health goals, and personal preferences. By consulting with your dentist and understanding the benefits of each option, you can make an informed decision that restores your smile and maintains optimal oral health.
