Nothing hits the spot on a hot San Diego day like an iced coffee, frozen smoothie, or ice-cold lemonade. But if that first sip sends a sharp jolt through your teeth, it could be a sign that your enamel needs some attention.
At Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care, Dr. John Mobilia often sees an increase in tooth sensitivity during the summer months. Fortunately, understanding what's causing it is the first step toward protecting your smile.
Your tooth enamel is the protective outer layer of your teeth. When it becomes worn down—or your gums begin to recede—the sensitive inner layer of the tooth becomes exposed. That's when cold drinks, sweet treats, or even a breath of cool air can trigger discomfort.
Common summer culprits include:
Many of these beverages are acidic, which can gradually contribute to enamel erosion over time.
You don't have to give up your favorite summer drinks. A few smart habits can help reduce sensitivity:
Occasional sensitivity is common, but if it becomes frequent or painful, don't ignore it. Persistent sensitivity could be caused by:
A dental exam can identify the cause and recommend the right tooth sensitivity treatment San Diego patients need to stay comfortable.
Summer should be about enjoying the sunshine—not avoiding your favorite cold drinks. By protecting your enamel and staying consistent with preventive dental care, you can reduce sensitivity and keep your smile healthy all season long.
If cold drinks are making your teeth ache, don't wait for the discomfort to get worse. Dr. John Mobilia and the team at Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care can evaluate your symptoms and recommend personalized treatment to protect your smile.
