Top 5 Reasons Your Gums Are Bleeding—And What You Can Do About It

Have you noticed pink in the sink after brushing or flossing? Occasional bleeding gums might not seem like a big deal—but your mouth could be trying to tell you something important. At Rancho Bernardo Family Dental Care, we believe a healthy smile starts with healthy gums, so let’s break down the top reasons your gums might be bleeding—and what you can do to fix it.

1. You’re Brushing Too Hard

Scrubbing your teeth like they’re a dirty pan might feel satisfying, but it’s not great for your gums. Overbrushing with too much pressure—or using a hard-bristled toothbrush—can cause gum irritation and recession over time.

What to do:

Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and use gentle, circular motions. Think of it as massaging your gums, not scrubbing them away.

2. You Just Started Flossing Again (Good Job!)

If it’s been a while since you last flossed, your gums may bleed a bit when you restart. This is a common response to inflammation and will usually improve as your gums become healthier.

What to do:

Keep at it! Daily flossing helps remove plaque and food particles your toothbrush can’t reach. The bleeding should subside in a week or two—if not, it’s time to check in with your dentist.

3. You Might Have Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, and bleeding is one of its biggest red flags. Caused by plaque buildup along the gumline, gingivitis is common—but reversible if caught early.

What to do:

Don’t skip your dental cleanings! Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that can’t be tackled at home. We’ll also assess your gum health and guide you through any needed treatments.

4. Your Hormones Are Fluctuating

Pregnancy, menstruation, and even certain birth control methods can increase blood flow to the gums, making them more sensitive and prone to bleeding.

What to do:

Keep up with regular dental visits and let us know about any changes in your health or medications. We’ll tailor your care accordingly and offer gentle solutions.

5. You Have an Underlying Health Condition or Are Taking Certain Medications

Some systemic health issues (like diabetes) or medications (like blood thinners) can increase the likelihood of gum bleeding.

What to do:

Always update your medical history during your visit. We work closely with you—and if needed, your physician—to provide safe, coordinated care that fits your whole health picture.
