Dental fillings are one of the most common treatments used to repair cavities and restore your teeth’s health and function. At Rancho Bernardo Dental Care, we help patients understand the various types of dental fillings and guide them toward the option that best fits their needs.
What Are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is a restorative material used to repair a tooth damaged by decay or minor fractures. Fillings restore the tooth’s shape, function, and strength while preventing further decay.
Types of Dental Fillings
1. Composite (Tooth-Colored) Fillings
Composite fillings are made from a mixture of plastic resin and fine glass particles. They are designed to match the natural color of your teeth, making them a popular choice for front or visible teeth.
Benefits:
Natural appearance
Bonds directly to the tooth structure for added strength
Mercury-free and safe for most patients
2. Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
Amalgam fillings are made from a durable mixture of metals, including silver, mercury, tin, and copper. They are typically used for molars and teeth that endure heavy chewing forces.
Benefits:
Extremely durable and long-lasting
Cost-effective option for back teeth
Resistant to wear and tear
3. Gold Fillings
Gold fillings are made from a gold alloy and are known for their durability and biocompatibility. Though less commonly used today due to cost, they remain an excellent long-term option.
Benefits:
Extremely long-lasting
Gentle on opposing teeth
High resistance to corrosion
4. Ceramic Fillings
Ceramic fillings, usually made of porcelain, are strong and visually appealing. They are often used for larger restorations where aesthetics are important.
Benefits:
Tooth-colored for a natural look
Stain-resistant
Strong and durable
How to Choose the Right Filling
The best filling for you depends on several factors:
Location of the cavity or tooth damage
Size of the restoration needed
Your aesthetic preferences
Budget considerations
Your dentist at Rancho Bernardo Dental Care can recommend the most suitable option after a thorough dental exam.
